The Griffith Observatory on the hill, including the building, grounds, and parking lot, is closed to the public until late 2005. This page describes special events that will be held at the Griffith Observatory Satellite facility and elsewhere. Check back here regularly or sign up for the Email News Service below.


Frontiers of Astronomy Lecture Series

Friends Of The Observatory (FOTO), the non-profit support group for Griffith Observatory, is pleased to continue sponsoring a members-supported lecture series - Frontiers of Astronomy - which is open to the public. Information on lectures will be posted here as they are scheduled.

What¹s in the Night Sky?
Explore the nighttime sky with our friends at the Griffith Observatory! This program is free to the public and augments the exhibition Glorious Treasures: 100 Years of Collecting by the Southwest Museum, on view at the Autry through July 4, 2004.

Wells Fargo Theatre · 7:00–8:00 p.m.
Dr. E. C. Krupp, director of the Griffith Observatory, discusses how Native Americans interpreted and used the sky.

South Lawn · 8:00–8:30 p.m.
Geri Keams (Navajo) weaves stories about the nighttime sky with a campfire backdrop.

South Lawn · 8:00–10:00 p.m.
Take an up-close and personal look at celestial objects through telescopes.

Public Star Parties

Free public star parties are held monthly with the assistance of the Los Angeles Astronomical Society and the Los Angeles Sidewalk Astronomers at the Griffith Observatory Satellite in the northeast corner of Griffith Park from 2:00 p.m. to 10 p.m. They are a chance for the whole familky to look at the moon, Mars, and other objects, to try out a variety of telescopes, and to talk to knowledgeable amateur astronomers about the sky and their equipment.

Light Festival

The annual LADWP Light Festival is held on Crystal Springs Drive next to the Observatory Satellite from November 21 through December 28. There is no through traffic on Crystal Springs after 5 p.m. on those dates.

Griffith Observatory Email News Service

Stay informed on what's happening in and around Griffith Observatory during its three years in a temporary facility and what's happening in the sky by subscribing to the Observatory's free Email News Service. Subscribers receive press releases and announcements of Observatory activities – including Frontiers of Astronomy lectures – and astronomical events of local interest. Roughly a dozen emails are sent each year.
